I had a similar feeling when I visited Monterey CA in '96 when I interviewed for an art director's position. I knew the area well when I was in the service, serving at Fort Ord for my advanced clerical training. I would dream that one day I might be able to retire to Monterey and spend my retirement years painting scenes from the life of the sea creatures there. As it turned out I didn't get that position and that was the last time I was able to visit that portion of Norther California. It represented a dream life for me and now I still hold dear thoughts if not dreams of that area. I know the feeling of using escapes like locations as a drug to experience a temporary nirvana from everyday existence. A sensitivity I'm aware of while a member of AA. So your thoughts rings true with me. Still I would love to spend an extended period of time in Monterey for whatever time I may have left on this planet. Thanks for sharing your story.
