I’ve been haunted by this image I captured on video in January 2020. A guy and his dog about to enter a building which I presume to be his home. Who is he? Is he an American expatriot, living a new life in San Miguel de Allende? What was his life like in the U.S.? Why did he come to Mexico? Could I meet him and ask all these questions of him in person some day?
No answers yet. But I have visited San Miguel since, in 2023. I’ll be there again in 2024 (likely when you read these words.) The video above is a sample of what my wife and I experienced in 2020 during our visit there. A handful of stories, glimpses into the lives of some adventurous souls. Covid was right around the corner. I didn’t get back to San Miguel until January 2023.
What are your thoughts on living an expat life? I’ve learned of at least a couple folks I’ve known over the years in Chicago, people I’d worked with, who now live in Thailand. Another is considering Portugal. My hope is that you sit back and watch with an open mind. As for me, I’m not concerned, honestly, about wherever I find myself in the coming years. People are kind everywhere. And we all want happiness, peace, safety, respect. I like to remember that.
